China: Tainted Milk Recalled

A Shanghai dairy company announced Thursday that it was recalling a
batch of milk that had been contaminated with lye, a chemical used to
clean pipes, according to a message posted on the company’s Web site and
a report by Xinhua, the state news agency. The company, Guangming Dairy
Group, said it was recalling 300 cartons of tainted milk produced
Monday. The Web site said that the milk had been tainted during routine
maintenance, and that the company would compensate customers.
Contaminated food is a constant issue in China,
and many Chinese have been especially vigilant about tainted milk since
a 2008 scandal that exposed a common practice in which a toxic
chemical, melamine, was added to milk.
